Rahul Gandhi To Move Gujarat HC After Surat Court’s Verdict In Modi Surname Remark Conviction Stay Plea
Mr. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Indian National Congress (INC,) is all set to move the Gujarat High Court (HC.)
On the 20th of April, Thursday, the Surat Court rejected the plea of Rahul Gandhi, seeking a stay on the conviction in the 2019 Defamation Case. Notably, on in March 2023, a Surat Court convicted Mr. Rahul Gandhi for his ‘Modi Surname’ remark. Mr. Purnesh Modi, filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi. The case was filed in 2019 and the verdict came 3 years later, in 2023.
Reacting to the two years imprisonment, Mr. Rahul Gandhi moved the Surat Court and demanded stay on conviction, which could also help Gandhi to ask the Lok Sabha secretariat to reverse its disqualification orders. After being convicted in the defamation case, the Lok Sabha issued a disqualification notice, removing Rahul Gandhi as the Member of Parliament (MP) of Wayanad.
Now, the dismissal of the plea by the Surat Court came as a major drawback for the Indian National Congress and Rahul Gandhi, who is hoping to contest the 2024 General elections.
Meanwhile, Mr. Rahul Gandhi would move the Gujarat High Court on the 21st of April, Friday, confirmed the Indian National Congress.
