On the 25th of January, Wednesday, the Supreme Court (SC) approved interim bail to Mr. Ashish Mishra in the Lakhimpur Kheri Violence incident.
The Top Court reviewed a petition filed by Mr. Ashish Mishra, the prime accused in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri Incident, which killed eight people, including four farmers.
On the 3rd of October, eight people including four farmers were killed after a SUV ran over them. The car was driven by Ashish Mishra Teni, son of Mr. Ajay Mishra Teni, the former Union Home Minister for Uttar Pradesh. The incident not only sparked tension among farmers but also gave political mileage to the opposition, demanding strict action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.) The matter was handed over to the special investigation team (SIT,) which proved and submitted all the evidence, alleging Ashish Mishra, as prime accused in the incident. The matter is currently under trail with the Allahabad High Court.
It is to be noted, earlier, Mr. Ashish Mishra filed a bail plea in the Allahabad High Court, but on the 26th of December, the Allahabad High Court rejected the bail plea. After disappointed by the Allahabad HC, Ashish Mishra filed a plea to the Supreme Court.
The Apex Court bench comprising of Justice Surya Kant and Justice J.K. Maheshwari approved the eight week bail and directed Mr. Ashish Mishra to either stay in Uttar Pradesh or Delhi, during the bail period.
