Chennai: A severe cyclone, now named Cyclone Fengal, has intensified in the Bay of Bengal and is heading towards the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The storm, which has gained strength unexpectedly, is expected to make landfall in the next few hours, bringing heavy rains and strong winds across the region.
Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, is already experiencing severe weather conditions. The airport has been temporarily closed until 7 pm on Saturday due to strong winds and heavy rainfall. This has caused significant disruptions in air travel, with many airlines either canceling or delaying flights. Passengers are facing considerable inconvenience as operations at the airport remain suspended.
The Chennai Meteorological Center has predicted that Cyclone Fengal will cross the coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram by Saturday evening. Authorities have warned of possible hot weather, strong winds, and heavy to very heavy rains in the coming hours.
In response to the storm, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced the establishment of relief camps and is actively monitoring preparedness efforts. Heavy rainfall is also affecting Puducherry, where the sea is becoming increasingly turbulent. The government has urged residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
