Mr. Nitin Gadkari, the Union Road, Transport and Highways Minister, on the 5th of March, emphasized on the need for growth and development in electricity-based vehicle technology in India.

At an event, ‘Rebuilding Infrastructure for India 2.0,’ Mr. Nitin Gadkari said, “The ministry plans to undertake the development of ropeways as an alternate transport solution in the hill and congested, urban areas.”  He further added, “Particularly I’m very much clearly interested to work on the technology of light rail transport.” 

It is to be noted, Mr. Nitin Gadkari addresses the’ Reimagining India 2.0 series,’ a series of dialogues, as a part of Silicon Valley monthly Dialogue (SVD.)  The initiative has been launched by the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.  Addressing an event of the series, Mr. Nitin Gadkari said, “We are in search of the technology, which can be cost-effective and which we can make in India for mass rapid transport (system) on electricity.” 

To make this vision a reality, the Indian Government is planning 11 ropeway projects to boost connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Sikkim.  Furthermore, Port connectivity projects are being implemented to enable swift movement of cargos, connecting all ports and inland water waste minerals to increase the efficiency of domestic and international trade routes.

In addition, a total of 65 projects with a length of 2,050 kilometers are planned for port connectivity which are in various stages of development.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government is also constructing 29 emergency landing facilities for fighter planes on national highways. The Road and Transport Minister said, “They are of strategic importance from a defense perspective.” 

With this series of SVDs, the Union Minister urged the United States companies to invest in India, and assured 100 % Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the road sector along with opportunities for joint ventures.  He said,  “US-based companies can collaborate with our research and development reports towards EV factory technology and the retrofitting industry. The government is strongly encouraging solar and the best charging mechanism for electric mobility.” 

With this, the Union Minister expressed confidence that India would be equal to the U.S.A., in terms of transport and road development by 2024.
