Mr. Nitin Gadkari, the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister on the 24th of June, announced to introduce of Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) for Indian cars.

During an event, Mr. Nitin Gadkari, working for a better automobiles system in India, said he approved the draft notification introducing Bharat NCAP.  Under this new initiative, automobiles in India would be accorded “star ratings” based on their crash test performance and other safety parameters.

Highlighting the 197 pages Bharat NCAP draft, it has rules and proposals inspired by the Global New Car Assessment Programme (GNCAP,) giving star ratings.  The new rule, under which, star rating would be based on crash tests, makes it easy for consumers to go for cars, with good ratings.

However, It’s not immediately clear whether these ratings will be mandatory.   Auto firms in India follow AIS-145 (automotive Indian standard-145), which enforces safety features for vehicles such as seatbelts tell-tale, passenger airbags, and the speed limit alarm, implemented in 2019.

In a series of tweets, Mr. Nitin Gadkari said, “Bharat-NCAP will serve as a consumer-centric platform, allowing customers to opt for safer cars based on their star ratings, while promoting healthy competition among OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) in India to manufacture safer vehicles.”

Meanwhile, automobile companies like Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra and others welcomed the new draft of Bharat NCAP.

Mr. Shashank Srivastava, the Executive Director of  Maruti Suzuki India, said: “For Maruti Suzuki safety is a priority.  All our products meet the regulatory requirements and beyond.  So we welcome the new steps regarding BNCAP and will be keenly study the details for a smooth implementation.  This would mean that auto companies that have not been giving enough importance to GNCAP ratings will now have little option but to fall in line.”

It is to be noted, India ranks top in the world in terms of the number of persons killed and third on the injury list, which needs to be controlled, hence Mr. Nitin Gadkari, proposed the draft.  The new rule for automobiles would give consumers a chance to make safer choices in terms of cars.
