The Army was called in to control the Shillong violence that broke out in Meghalaya’s capital. The Government switched off cell phone connectivity in the entire Khasi Hills region. The authorities might also pull the private broadband if conditions worsen.
The Home Ministry deployed 11 companies of paramilitary forces to help the police maintain law in the chaotic city. The violence began last week between the tribals and residents of a migrant Punjabi settlement.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma alleges the clashes were sponsored. The CM further added, “We have understood that there are people who are funding this agitation. Expensive alcohol and money is being given.”
This issue began when a tribal bus conductor was assaulted allegedly by residents from the Punjabi Line area. Three more tribal children were allegedly beaten by the Punjabi Line area residents. However, there was further retaliation when fake report on social media stated one of the children died.
This led to an angry mob of tribals attacking the migrant Punjabi colony. More than 10 people were injured in the clash including a policeman. The police arrested one individual and imposed a curfew in the area.
On Friday. Multiple mobs violated the curfew order leading to violence with the police. Petrol bombs were hurled at shops and vehicles by the angry mob.
