Bareilly is becoming the base of bribery. Did you ever hear a woman getting pregnant five times in a time period of just 10 months? Nope I am sure you haven’t. But it did happen in Uttar Pradesh.
Audit of beneficiaries of the Janani Suraksha Yojna in Uttar Pradesh revealed some mind blowing facts. According to them, a woman was declared pregnant three times by the health officials in just a span of 4 months to avail the money benefits of the scheme.
But the matter doesn’t end there. Similar situation was observed in the case of another woman in Bahraich, this time a 60-year-old. According to the officials, she got pregnant “five times in 10 months”.
As per the investigating officers, the employees of primary health care centers are the ones who have made the most money out of this fraud. Under this large pan-UP scam, the PHC employees would make fictitious transfers of Rs 1400 to the poor village women, give them a meager cut and keep the rest for themselves.
A surprising grand total of 200 such cases have come into light alone in Baundi PHC.The matter came into light when Badaun’s Asha Devi visited the bank three times in four months with the cheque received under the scheme. Smelling something foul in the matter, the bank officials informed the matter to the Health Department and that’s when the whole matter broke out.
Following the fiasco, the additional Director of the Health Department Dr Subodh Sharma said that strict action will be taken against the accused as soon as the investigation reports are out. Janani Suraksha Yojna was launched by the Uttar Pradesh government in 2005 in a bid to provide poor pregnant women safe delivery.
