On Thursday, the Supreme Court of India ordered all States and Union Territories (UT) to implement the 2016 Act on the rights of people with disabilities. The Apex Court gave the States and Union territories three months to implement the Act.
A division bench consisting of Justice Arun Mishra and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer have informed the states and UTs that they need to file reports on compliance of provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016.
The Court’s order was sent out after a plea was filed by the Justice Sunanda Bhandare Foundation. The plea directed the Central Government and all the States to implement the Act of 2016.
Advocate Manali Singhal appeared for the foundation during the hearing. Singhal stated that Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Lakshadweep, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh filed an affidavit stating compliance of the Persons with Disabilities Act 1995. On the other end, the Court has sought compliance with the 2016 Act.
