The All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM,) on the 3rd of January, launched an online campaign against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act [CAA,] 2019, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR.)
The campaign was launched on Twitter and other social media platforms like Facebook. To be a part of the campaign against the CAA, the NRC and the NPR, Asaduddin Owaisi, the President of the AIMIM, encouraged people to upload videos of them reading the Preamble of the Constitution in different languages. He asked the citizens to upload the videos on several social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and TikTok with #MeraSamvidhan and #WeThePeopleOfIndia.
The AIMIM members asked the citizens of India to tag 3 friends upon uploading the video and continue doing the same till the 26th of January (India’s Republic Day.)
Asaduddin Owaisi launched the campaigned so Prime Minister Narendra Modi could see the outrage of the public and withdraw the CAA as well as put an end to the NRC and the NPR.
Besides AIMIM, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS,) the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of West Bengal, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of Tamil Nadu and other parties are also against the CAA. The major reason these parties are opposing the CAA is it grants citizenship to refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, who have been residing in India since or before the 31st of December, 2014, based on their religious beliefs. The six communities eligible for Indian citizenship under the CAA are the Jains, the Buddhists, the Hindus, the Parsis, the Christians and the Sikhs.
Though the Central Government introduced the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, it has not yet been implemented.
