On the occasion of the May Day, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government organised a special train for all the stranded migrant labourers in the State.

The special train carried 1,200 stranded migrants from Lingampally in Telangana to Hatia in Jharkhand.

Arun Kumar, the Director General (DG) of the Railway Protection Force (RPF,) said, “The 24 coach train started at 4:50 A.M., today (Friday.)”

The permission to send the migrant labourers came after the Union Government permitted the shifting of the migrant labourers, students and tourists, amid lockdown in India.  Though the Home Ministry issued a notice to shift the stranded migrant labourers, students and tourists, state governments need to take permission and approval before organising any bus or train for these workers.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued guidelines for the same which includes social distancing, hygiene, sanitization of the bus or train and screening for the Coronavirus.

A senior Railway official said, “As of now, only one train is running. The decision on further trains will be taken as per the direction of the MHA and talks with the starting and receiving states.”

When asked to choose train instead of bus, Srinivas Yadav, the Minister of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Cinematography, in Telangana said,  “There are around 15 lakh migrants in the State and it is unsafe to send them by buses to towns and villages between 500 and 1,000 kilometres away in such hot weather.  Social distancing will be a casualty.”

The Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Sorani confirmed the arrival of the migrant labourers through a tweet and extended gratitude to the Central Government for approving the same.

The decision to run another such train would be taken after the Home Ministry of India’s approval by the 2nd of May.
