After the recently launched Balanagar flyover, to make travel easier and safer for the citizens, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government is working to develop the Metro Neo Project. Prepared by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) in Hyderabad, the detailed project report (DPR) of the metro has been sent to the ruling TRS Government, for approval.
The Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) entrusted Maha Metro with the task of preparing a report and examining the possibility of the new Metro Neo Project. Metro Neo, also known as Metrolite, is a light rail (LRT) urban transit system being planned in India for cities with lower ridership projection with the needs of metro systems. The Metro Neo project would cater to lower passenger capacity at a reduced cost than a metro line in big cities with maximum population.
The new planned 15.5 km metro would connect Warangal, Hanamkonda and Kazipet regions of Telangana, making travel to these locations easier and cheaper for the people. In addition, the metro would be a combination of at-grade (7.1 km) and elevated system (8.4 km) alignment with 21 stations connecting Warangal and Kazipet railway stations via Hanamkonda.
The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Ministry’s annual report for 2020-2021 mentioned the new metro construction. The decision to construct the metro rail in Warangal was taken to continue the growth and development of Warangal. Besides the metro rail, the K. Chandrashekar Rao led Telangana Government also plans to construct an elevated bus rapid transit system under the Metro Neo Project in the City.
After Hyderabad, Warangal City is considered as one of the busiest cities of Telangana. Recognizing the necessary growth and development of Warangal, the concerned authority decided to construct metro rail connectivity. In addition, the State Government is also planning to set up IT companies in Warangal, making it an IT Hub, like Hyderabad.
After the approval of the State Government, the same DRP for the Metro Neo Project would be forwarded to the Union Ministry.
With this, after the complete work, Warangal would be the second Telangana city with a metro rail system. After Hyderabad, Warangal is the second largest city in Telangana with 10 lakh population.
Meanwhile, as per the DPR, the estimated cost of the Metro Neo Project is expected to be Rs. 1,020 crores.
