Mr. Srikanta Mahata, three time Trinamool Congress Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and the West Bengal Minister of State for Consumers Affairs Department, has been censured and issued a show cause by his party.
The show cause notice was issued after a video went viral where Mr. Srikanta Mahata was seen questioning the credibility and morality of the celebrity leaders in the TMC. In the video, Mr. Srikanta Mahata said, “Leaders like Mimi Chakraborty, Nusrat Jahan, June Malia and Saayoni Ghosh are looting money. But they are being considered assets for the party. I had been trying to bring this notice to our senior leaders like Abhishek Banerjee and Subrata Bakshi. But they refused to acknowledge that.”
After the show cause notice, the West Bengal Minister withdrew his statement and apologised for the same.
The statement came like a verbal attack on celebrities, especially from the Bengali TV industry who joined the ruling TMC in West Bengal.
After the withdrawal of Mr. Srikanta Mahata’s statement, Mr. Ajit Maiti, the Trinamool Congress’s West Midnapore District Coordinator, said, “Mahata has withdrawn his statement and also apologised for the same. He has explained that he made such statements being driven by emotions.”
Moreover, this is not the first time the celebrity faces of the Trinamool Congress have faced criticism from the senior party leaders. In the past also, many such incidents happened where TMC leaders have taken a dig at celebrities, Bengali silver screen actors who joined politics and are serving as ministers, MLAs or other prominent positions in the party.
