The Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 vaccination drive for individuals between 18 to 44 years old is likely to begin from June in Telangana.

According to sources, due to the shortage of COVID-19 vaccines, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government decided to wait to start the third phase of the vaccination drive.

Somesh Kumar, the Chief Secretary of Telangana confirmed the delay in vaccination to 18+.

Somesh Kumar said, “Holding talks with vaccine manufacturers at the State level for such terms is difficult and there is a definite need for the Centre to intervene.”

Considering the delay in production of COVID-19 vaccination, the Telangana Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar said, the State Government would begin the drive soon.

Somesh Kumar said, “We were told by the vaccine manufacturers that by June or July, the status of vaccine production will improve. By that time, more Covid vaccines, manufactured by other companies including single-dose vaccine of Johnson and Johnson, will also be available in the country. This could further ease the demand.” He also said, “We need to have a substantial stock of vaccines before starting to vaccinate individuals between 18 years and 44 years. The Centre has greater control over vaccine manufacturing companies and that’s the reason why it has to play a more active role in sourcing and fixing the price of the vaccines.”

Close to 1.5 crore people are between the age group of 18 to 44 years old in Telangana.

Meanwhile, Telangana has 4,75,748 positive cases, of which 77,127 are active cases, 3,96,042 are recovered/discharged cases and 2,579 are deceased cases.

In addition, the recovery rate of the COVID-19 infection in the State is at 81 % and fatality rate is at 0.54 %.
