The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to be a powerful political party in Karnataka, after the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD[S],) on the 23rd of July, did not win the majority of votes during the no confidence motion.

After missing two deadlines to conduct the floor test, K.R. Ramesh Kumar, the Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly, finally conducted the trust vote on the 23rd of July.

Initially, the no confidence motion was expected to be held on the 18th of July, however, due to several reasons, the Karnataka Government postponed the it.

The political crisis, which was going on for the past 20 days, finally came to an end with the victory of the BJP, which now can rule the State after winning by 6 votes.

There were 105 BJP Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and 99 MLAs of the alliance of the JD(S) and the INC in the House, excluding the nominated MLAs and Speaker of the House.

Ramesh Kumar announced the JD(S) and the Indian National Congress (INC) got a total of 99 votes in favour, whereas the BJP managed to get 105 votes.

Although the debate on the floor test to prove the strength of the ruling Government started at 11:00 A.M., the no confidence motion started late in the evening, around 6:00 P.M.

Siddaramaiah, a member of the INC, demanded strict action against the 16 rebel MLAs who resigned from the Party. He stated it was because of them the ruling Government fell short of MLAs and lost its power.

Siddaramaiah said, “15 to 16 of our MLAs violated the whip by abstaining from the House during the trust vote, thereby, it is a clear violation of Schedule 10 (of the Constitution) and attracts disqualification.” He also alleged the BJP of bribing the MLAs to vote in favour of the Party.

Siddaramaiah said, “This wholesale trade is a problem. If there is retail trade of one or two members then it’s not a problem…Rs. 25 crores, Rs. 30 crores, Rs. 50 crores were offered, where is this money coming from?”

K.C. Venugopal, the General Secretary of the INC, issued a press release and said, “Political morality and basic democratic values got defeated by the unscrupulous political horse trading of BJP in Karnataka.”

Venugopal said the Central Government, Governor, Government of Maharashtra and the BJP are behind the destruction of the Karnataka Government.

He defended his allegations and said, “Video evidence of BJP leaders offering money to the defected MLAs for destabilising the coalition Government and carrying out political horse trading was brought out in the legislative assembly.”

B.S. Yeddyurappa will be the new Chief Minister of Karnataka, under the rule of the BJP.

However, an official announcement regarding the same is yet to be made.

Stay tuned for further updates.
