Farmers in Telangana are facing growing concerns over water supplies, crop losses and farm costs. The state’s drought declaration has now led to fresh demands from the main opposition party for stronger relief measures.
On Wednesday, BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan Kumar urged the Congress government to announce a clear plan to deal with the possible effects of El Niño, a weather pattern that can affect rainfall. He also called for farm aid from state funds and a drinking water plan through June 2027.
Sravan Kumar said the government had declared 365 mandals drought-hit, including 111 severely affected areas, on October 27. He claimed the order did not set out clear farm aid amounts or commit state funds.
He also cited a fall in Kharif sowing from 139.28 lakh acres to 126.06 lakh acres. According to figures he shared, reservoirs held 179.63 TMC feet of water, compared with a total capacity of 585 TMC feet.
The BRS leader questioned the use of available Krishna and Godavari river water and called for expert-supervised water lifting. He also urged the government to publish its relief budget and act on a ₹802.92-crore contingency plan for seeds, irrigation, fodder and drinking water.
These claims and demands were made by the opposition leader; the source does not include a response from the state government.
