Hyderabad witnessed yet another death by dowry. Sandhya Singh was from Ghaziabad in UP, she married Vishal Vaibhav an Army Major. The two moved to Hyderabad as Vishal was posted at the Army’s 54th Infantry Division in Bollaram. Sandhya was a radio jockey with Radio Charminar and she had hosted a Sufi night at Banjara hills on Sunday. She went to the office on Monday but colleagues reveal she seemed depressed and left work early.
On Tuesday the 18 of April, Sandhya was found hanging by her husband in their army quarters. The death was pronounced as a suicide until Sandhya’s sister Uma Singh filed a complaint on Monday. This led to the police to register a case under section 304(b) of IPC against Vishal, the husband.
Begumpet Assistant Commissioner of police S. Ranga Rao revealed that Vishal found his wife Sandhya’s body hanging from the ceiling and alerted the police. S Ranga Rao also told the media that they are yet to bring Vishal in for questioning but the army informed the police that Vishal was admitted in the Army Hospital ICU due to chest pains on Thursday.
Sandhya and Vishal were married for a year and a half and her parents have claimed that Vishal and his family have been harassing Sandhya for dowry as they didn’t give any at the wedding. This is one of many dowry-suicide cases. In 2015, Hyderabad recorded 25 such deaths and Telangana has reported 262 dowry death cases.
