Water tankers play an important role in meeting the daily needs of many Hyderabad residents. However, heavy groundwater use in busy areas has raised concerns about the supply available to local households.
The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has now asked private tanker operators to draw groundwater only from areas outside the Outer Ring Road (ORR).
The decision followed a meeting between HYDRAA officials and tanker operators on November 4. Operators agreed to follow the new arrangement and resume supplies.
They can draw borewell water from the Peri-Urban Region outside the ORR, but they must first obtain the required permissions.
HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath said the move aims to reduce pressure on groundwater sources in residential areas.
The agency will work with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board and other departments to check large-scale commercial extraction.
The new rule aims to protect local groundwater supplies and reduce pressure on household borewells.
