Cyclone Arnab Tests Andhra’s Preparedness

Andhra Pradesh is facing a major weather challenge as Cyclone Arnab continues to move across its coast. Heavy rain and strong winds have affected several districts, putting relief teams on alert.

The severe cyclonic storm began crossing the coast early Wednesday and is expected to complete the process by afternoon, according to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA). The storm was centred about 30 km from Narsapuram on Wednesday morning.

Heavy rain and gusty winds affected Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna districts. Officials reported uprooted trees, damaged crops and power cuts. Low-lying areas in Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district also faced flooding. No loss of life had been reported at the time of the update.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the situation through a teleconference involving around 32,000 officials and staff. He directed officials to clear fallen trees, restore power after strong winds subside and ensure enough food, drinking water and medical care at cyclone shelters.

Naidu also asked officials to assess crop damage, protect farmland and keep National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams ready. The government is focusing on public safety and restoring normal life in affected areas.
