Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech has announced a 40% price cut for its malaria vaccine, Mosqivac, through an agreement with UNICEF and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
The price will fall to €5.50 per dose, making the vaccine more affordable for child immunisation programmes. The agreement is expected to save around $50 million between 2027 and 2029 and help up to one million more children receive the full four-dose course.
Mosqivac is based on the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine, developed by GSK and partners. It was the first malaria vaccine recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021.
Under the agreement, UNICEF will manage the deal, while Gavi will provide financial support. An advance payment through the International Finance Facility for Immunisation helped make the price reduction possible.
Bharat Biotech and GSK have invested around $200 million in new manufacturing facilities, product development and technology transfer to improve supply and lower costs.
The move aims to expand access to malaria vaccination and protect more children in areas affected by the disease.
