The debate over voter lists has become a major point of disagreement between the ruling BJP and the Opposition. The Congress and other INDIA bloc parties have been questioning the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Against this backdrop, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has challenged Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav to discuss the issue in a special session of Parliament. Speaking at a BJP meeting in Lucknow on Friday, Shah said the party was ready for an open debate and had nothing to hide.
He also accused the Opposition of disrupting Parliament instead of discussing the issue there.
The challenge came ahead of a Congress event against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the SIR process. The event, called a “public impeachment”, was postponed to Saturday due to rain in Delhi.
Meanwhile, the INDIA bloc has continued to demand a review of the voter-list revision and Kumar’s resignation.
