NEET-PG Admissions May See a Major Shift

India’s postgraduate medical admission process may soon move towards a new system. The change could affect how medical graduates qualify for courses after completing their MBBS.

An expert panel has recommended replacing the current percentile-based system for NEET-PG and NEET-SS with a rank-based merit system from 2027. The 12-member panel submitted its report to the Supreme Court on November 3.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has given initial approval to the proposal. However, the final rules and implementation details are still awaited.

The panel has also recommended that authorities should not lower qualifying marks just to fill vacant seats. It has suggested reducing fees for non-clinical postgraduate courses and removing service bond requirements for students in pre-clinical and para-clinical courses.

The recommendations follow repeated reductions in NEET-PG cut-off marks to fill vacant seats. The Supreme Court is also examining the issue and has sought a long-term solution.

The proposed changes are not final yet. Medical graduates will have to wait for an official announcement on the new admission rules.
