Ms. Rekha Sharma, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, finally spoke about the recent Manipur Violence sexual assault against two women.
Speaking to the media, Ms. Rekha Sharma said that the Manipur Government did not respond to the NCW, which demanded to discuss the violence against women.
On the 21st of July, Ms. Rekha Sharma said, “We had to verify the authenticity, and also the complaints were not from Manipur, some were not even from India. We reached out to authorities but no response was received from them but then we took suo motu cognisance when the video (of women being paraded naked) went viral yesterday.”
The response and statement of Ms. Rekha Sharma came a day after the hue and cry over the Manipur Violent incident against two women,
Surfcaed online on the 19th of July, the horrific video of two women forced to parade naked and allegedly gang raped was narrating many such hidden crimes against women by agitated mob. The video which has now become a matter of concern, demanding response from the Central and the State Government, is raising several important questions.
The NCW which took the suo moto cognizance of the incident said, they tried reaching out the Manipur Government and officials, to speak abut the rising number of crimes against women in Manipur. However, neither the management and concerned authority, nor the police took importance and reached to the National Commission for Women, back. In fact, the Manipur Police even failed to arrest the main accused in the recently viral Manipur Incident, after the crime, which occurred on the 4th of May.
Since the past 2 months of the incident, the accused was roaming free and was arrested just a day after the video of the Meitei women being assaulted went viral. It was the video, which led to the arrest of the main accused and his friends involved in the crime.
