Benefits from the 7th Pay Commission

The 7th pay commission was approved by the Narendra Modi government in June last year. Six months after the approval, the Central Government started working on the changes to impart benefits to its employees. The Government has made recent developments and is working on the recommendations made by the seventh pay commission.

The 7th pay commission was submitted in November 2015 and was approved after seven months, in June 2016. There have been several protests to implement the revised pay structure. Some of the recommendations given by the seventh pay commission include a 14.27 per cent hike in basic pay, 138.71 percent hike in house rental allowances (HRA) and 49.79 per cent for other allowances.

In spite of the recommendation to do away with 53 of the 196 allowances that the government employees get, there is still a burden of Rs. 29,300 crore in the current fiscal year budget. Solution to the burden is being looked upon.The seventh pay commission will benefit 47 lakh Central Government employees and 53 lakh pensioners. Several states have already started implementing the recommendation of the 7th pay commission. In states like Jammu and Kashmir where the government decided to implement the seventh pay commission from April 2018 has now been improvised.

The State Minister Haseeb Drabu has said that the seventh pay commission will benefit the employees with retrospective effect from 1st January 2016. The government is now working on paying arrears to the government employees and pensioners.
