Hyderabad is seeing an increasing rise in the cases of conjunctivitis as hospitals are receiving patients coming in for treatment for the eye infection and inflammation on a regular basis.

Conjunctivitis is an eye infection with symptoms like redness around the eye and inflammation. The eye infection is caused by a virus or bacteria that causes inflammation of the outer layer of the eye.

The infection is contagious and spreads easily when the cause is a virus, doctors advice timely treatment for conjunctivitis. Although it is a simple infection leaving it untreated can lead to multiple complications.

Eye Specialist at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Dr. Ravinder Goud said, “In some cases, the virus can cause damage to inner parts of the eye, which can damage vision. Treating the infection early is the best way out. In most cases, hygiene measures are just as important as medication.”

Dr. Goud has also reported a few years ago viral conjunctivitis would clear up within three to four days but now it takes as long as 15 days to be cured.

Dr. Goud was quoted, “There appears to be some resistance that the viruses may have developed. The virus paves the way for bacterial infection.”

The doctor has advised people affected with the virus to rest, hydrate and maintain good hand hygiene. Dr. Goud also instructed infected patients to reduce contact with other people to avoid spreading the virus.
