The Islamabad High Court (IHC,) on the 3rd of March, directed the Indian Government to appoint a lawyer for Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav.

During a hearing, the Islamabad High Court gave a final deadline to the Indian Government asking to hire a lawyer by the 13th of April, to argue over the death sentence announced to retired Indian Navy Officer Mr. Kulbhushan Jadhav.

It is to be noted, a Pakistani military court in July 2019, convicted the Indian Navy officer as terrorist and sentenced death.

Mr. Kulbhushan Jadhav, a 51-year-old was convicted with the charges of espionage and terrorism in April 2017.  Later, in July 2019, he was sentenced to death, which was challenged by the Indian Government in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).  The Indian Government demanded consular access to Jadhav and revocation of  the death sentence.

After hearing both sides, the Hague-based ICJ issued a verdict in July, 2019, asking Pakistan to give India consular access to Jadhav and also ensure review of his conviction.  As per the directions of the ICJ, the Islamabad court formed a three-member larger bench comprising Chief Justice Athar Minallah, Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb.  The committee formed in August 2020 repeatedly asked the Indian Government to nominate a lawyer from Pakistan for Jadhav but New Delhi so far refused by insisting that it should be given a chance to appoint an Indian lawyer.  However, after a couple of year, the IHC announced a deadline, asking the Indian Government to appoint a lawyer.
