In an attempt to protect nature, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday banned plastic items in areas located on the banks of the River Ganga. This is a ban imposed on all kinds of plastic like carry bags, plates and cutlery in Haridwar and Rishikesh.
The ban was given by a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar. The ban is also on sale, manufacture and storage of plastic till Uttarkashi.
A heavy fine of Rs. 5,000 will be imposed for those who violate the ban. The NGT also confirmed strict action would be taken against everyone even erring officials who break the law. The NGT explained the heavy fine was due to the continued use of plastic even after the earlier ban. The NGT is aiming to keep River Ganga free of pollutants and plastic is one of the biggest problems.
