Punjab Congress Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu will not face imprisonment in the 30 year old road rage case. The Supreme Court said the cricketer turned politician is guilty of voluntarily hurting a man in 1988. The Court fined Sidhu only Rs. 1,000 even though the man beaten up by the Minister died in hospital.
The 55 year old politician will continue to serve as a Minister in the Punjab Government after the Court’s verdict. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh tweeted, “Welcome the judgement.”
He further added, “His acquittal on culpable homicide charges shows justice has prevailed. I’d always maintained that there was nothing willful in his act, and the judges have also upheld the same. Law has duly taken its course.”
Gurnam Singh was the victim who was struck on the head by Mr. Sidhu and died of a haemorrhage. However, Mr. Sidhu argued the man died of a cardiac arrest.
