On the 5th of October, Mr. Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) launched the Swechha Programme in the State.

Launched under the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government, the programme aims at the health and hygiene of adolescent girls studying in government schools and colleges. Under the programme, the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy Government would provide quality sanitary napkins at free of cost to girls of State run schools and colleges.

While launching the programme, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy said, “Many reports stated that almost 23 percent of the young girls in this country are staying away from attending schools and colleges during menstruation. In order to change these circumstances, the State government has been taking measures right from improving toilets in all government institutions under the Nadu-Nedu initiative to bring the Swechha programme.” He further said, “Once in every two months, the officials will visit the schools and distribute napkins to the girl students studying in 10,388 schools and colleges across the state. In addition, the government, in partnership with UNICEF, WASH and P&G, will be conducting special awareness classes on menstruation and the importance of health and hygiene.”

In addition, close to 50 % of the Indian population of women, especially in rural and urban areas, are not using sanitary napkins. Apart from awareness of menstruation, the State Government would also create awareness on the Disha App and its use for the safety purpose of women in A.P.

To launch the programme, the YSRCP Government released an amount of Rs. 32 crores, which would be used to provide sanitary napkins to 10 lakh students (class 7th -12th.) Every year, 120 sanitary napkins would be distributed to each student for free. Besides this, the State Government would also launch quality napkins at affordable prices at YSR Cheyutha stores for women in urban and rural areas.

Today’s event was attended by the YSRCP ministers Mr. Thaneti Vanita, Mr. Adimulapu Suresh, Mr. Alla Kali Krishna Srinivas, the Women and Child Welfare Principal Secretary Ms. A.R. Anuradha, the Social Welfare Principal Secretary Ms. K. Sunitha, the Tribal Welfare Secretary Ms. Kantilal Dande, the Health and Family Welfare Commissioner Mr. Katamaneni Bhasker, the Women and Child Welfare Director (Disha Special Officer) Ms. Kritika Shukla, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Official Ms. Vetri Selvi and other officials.
