Ahead of the inauguration of the newly renovated Habibganj Railway Station in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, renaming of the railway station is making headlines.

According to the media sources, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is planning to rename the railway station after the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the former Prime Minister of India.  The decision to rename the railway station after Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee is to honour him, who was said to be associated with the state and city.

An upset Congress has asked BJP leaders to focus on works and not names.   Mr. Jaibhan Singh Pavaiya, the former national convener of the Bajrang Dal and a member of the BJP national executive committee, demanded the station be renamed after the late Vajpayee.  He said, “As I probed who this man Habib was, I was told that he was a muscleman and used to recover money from locals and later got a residential area built.I urge the rail ministry to name the station after Bharat Ratna late PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.”

This is not the first time BJP leaders in Madhya Pradesh demanded to rename Habibganj Railway station.  In the past, Ms. Pragya Singh Thakur, the Member of Parliament (MP) of the BJP made this demand several times and even sent a formal proposal to the railways in this regard.  However, the urge went unnoticed.  Now, ahead of the inauguration of the renovated Habibganj Railway Station, the BJP leaders once again urged the Central Government to consider the same and rename the station.

However, the proposal of the BJP has disappointed the Indian National Congress, which criticised the Party.  The INC said, “This Government doesn’t believe in working rather has faith in renaming things.”

Mr. Jitu Patwari, the Working President of the INC in Madhya Pradesh said, “But whether the Central Government could offer an account of assets it’s selling by renaming them and also whether the Centre could offer an account of anarchy in the country.”   He asked the BJP to focus on work rather than fighting and proposing renaming public properties like railway stations, stadiums and airports.

Continuing the criticism, the INC said that a single name change entails crores of rupees in the budget.  At a time when the nation is fighting the deadly Wuhan virus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Government should not spend crores on renaming public places.

Meanwhile, Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India is set to inaugurate the renovated Habibganj Railway Station on the 15th of November.  Billed as the country’s first world class railway station built on a public private partnership (PPP) mode, the world class Habibganj Railway Station renovation cost Rs. 450 crores.
