Mumbai: Starring Sonam Kapoor in a lead role, “Neerja” is an upcoming Indian biographical film based on the hijacking of the Pan Am Flight 73 in 1986 at the Karachi airport. Pakistan banned the film for showcasing the country in poor light. Earlier, the film was set to hit Pakistani screens on February 19 but later the country opposed the screening.
Abid Rasheed, IMGC Executive Director, said that there were certain anti-Pakistan elements in “Neerja” and it featured Muslims in a negative light. An official of Commerce Ministry also added that due to the objectionable nature of the content which portrayed Pakistan in poor light the certificate to import the film was revoked.
Directed by Ram Madhvani, the “Neerja” revolves around the young flight attendant, Neerja Bhanot. She was shot dead by the terrorists, who hijacked the plane. Neerja sacrificed her life while saving hundreds of lives on the plane. The picture is slated for a grand release on February 19, 2016.
