On the night of the 7th of May, a tragic incident took place in Mamillapalli village of Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh. 

At least 10 people died and many were injured due to a blast of gelatin sticks. The impact of the blast was such that the body parts of the victims lay strewn all over the place at the blast site.  The exact reason behind the sudden blast is yet to be known. 

The incident took place around 9:30 A.M., on Saturday.  Gelatin sticks exploded when labourers were unloading the gelatin sticks in the limestone quarry without permission.  The vehicle from which the labourers were unloading the gelatin sticks was registered with  C. Nageswara Reddy, a resident of Chengaiah gari palle village of B. Mattam mandal.

Soon after the incident, police of Porumamilla and Kasinayina rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation and an inquiry.  

The Kalasapadu Sub Inspector (SI) Gani Maddileti, said, “This morning a load of gelatin sticks was transported to the mines near Mamillapalle village.  When the labour were unloading the material, all of a sudden the gelatin sticks blasted off (sic.)”

Initially the death toll was five, later five more bodies were recovered from the spot. The rescue operation is underway. 

Meanwhile, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, expressed condolences to the families who lost their kin. 

The State Government also asked for a detailed investigation and reasons behind the blast.
