Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy, the former Chief Minister of a united Andhra Pradesh State and leader of the Indian National Congress, joined the opposition, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)
With this, Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy is the second Congress leader who has joined the BJP, especially ahead of the 2024 state assembly elections.
Recently, Mr. Anil Antony, the son of Congress veteran from Kerala, A.K. Antony also joined the BJP.
Mr. Reddy, who served as the last Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh before the formation of Telangana State in 2014, resigned from the Congress in March 2023. He cited differences with the party leadership and principles to be the reason behind quitting the party.
Now, Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy, who hails from the Rayalaseema region, is expected to strengthen the BJP’s presence in the area where he has considerable influence. He could also be projected as a potential chief ministerial candidate by the BJP, which is attempting to emerge as a third alternative in the Telugu State of Andhra Pradesh.
The Telugu State of Andhra Pradesh would go for state assembly elections, next year. Notably, the BJP is making efforts to be the third party in the State, after the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) and the opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP.)
