Kabul: A statement of Friday said that the Taliban has announced the appointment of Mullah Akhtar Mansoor as their new leader. A day after the insurgents confirmed the death of Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taliban appointed the new leader of the militant movement.

The Taliban in a Pashto language statement said the news. The statement reads, “After (Omar’s) death the leadership council and Islamic scholars of the country, after long consultations, appointed his close and trusted friend and his former deputy Mullah Akhtar Mansoor as the leader.”
