The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi spoke about the commitment he plans on making towards the East Asia Summit (EAS.) This was done in an attempt to address issues on politics, security and trade in Asia.
PM Modi addressed an annual gathering of leaders in Manila, Philippines. He was quoted saying, “We look forward to the East Asia Summit attaining greater salience in years to come. I reiterate my commitment to work with you to address the political, security and economic issues of the region.”
The East Asia Summit was founded in 2005 and is the chief forum in the Asia Pacific region. The EAS has played an important role in the geopolitical, economic and strategic growth of East Asia.
Other than the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Member states, the East Asia Summit also includes India, Japan, China, United States, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea.
The 31st ASEAN Summit and the 12th East Asia Summit is ongoing in Manila in the Philippines. The leaders of these countries are expected to discuss issues related to North Korea’s nuclear and missile tests, terrorism and the situation in Afghanistan.
