After Beef the ban in the Country, a Bharatiya Janata Party leader has come up with a ban on momos. The momos are a famous street snack, which replaced the samosa after people became more health conscious.

Ramesh Arora, the BJP legislator and Lawyer said on Wednesday “Momos have been found to be the root cause of several life threatening diseases, including cancer of the intestine.” Arora also cited scientific evidence to support his claim. He referred particularly to monosodium glutamate (MSG,) a common salt used in many Asian dishes.

Momos, the famous dish in India traces its origins to Nepal and Tibet. This suggestion, however, was not received well by many. Arora said, “Ajinomoto, a kind of salt, causes serious diseases, including cancer. It is responsible for converting a minor headache and migraine.”

According to a popular news daily, Arora has been irritated by “foreigners including Bangladeshi and Burmese” who have set up the business of making and selling momos. This has added xenophobia to his campaign.

Arora’s efforts to create awareness have paid off well and it has reduced the sale of the momos by 35 per cent in Jammu and Kashmir.
