Political leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to P.V. Narasimha Rao on the 28th of June, which is Mr. Rao’s birth anniversary.

Palumarvarthi Venkata Narasimha Rao was the 9th Prime Minister of India and held this post from 1991 to 1996. Mr. Rao, who paved the way for the development of the Nation in terms of economic reforms and security, is also known as the ‘Father of Indian Economic Reforms.’

Narasimha Rao was born on the 28th of June 1921 to a Telugu speaking Brahmin family of Telangana. He was the 2nd non Hindi speaking person to become the Prime Minister of India.

Narasimha joined politics as a member of the Indian National Congress (INC,) after India achieved independence in 1947. He also served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and was also a 6 time Member of Parliament (MP) of Lok Sabha.

He was close to retiring from politics in 1991, but he had to join politics again after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, in 1991 May.

Narasimha Rao’s contribution to economic reforms

Rao managed foreign trade and improved the economic situation of India during his tenure. He abolished the Controller of Capital Issues.

Rao also introduced the Security and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Act in 1992 to register and regulate security market intermediaries, the National Stock Exchange trading system and India’s equity market to develop Indian economic standards.

He brought a massive transformation in the economy of India by appointing Dr. Manmohan Singh as the Finance Minister of India. With Rao’s orders, Dr. Singh implemented the historic policies welcoming globalisation and liberalisation in India, thereby saving the Country, which was otherwise on the brink of bankruptcy.

Twitter is flooded with messages remembering the contribution of P.V. Narasimha Rao to the Nation’s development.
