Sharad Pawar, the President of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP,) on the 13th of February, announced, his Party will contest the Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra.

The NCP members suggested Mr. Pawar contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, as he is one of the most experienced Party members.

Speaking about being a possible candidate and contesting the Lok Sabha elections, Mr. Pawar said, “Some senior party leaders and the sitting MP from Madha insisted that I contest election (from Madha). I haven’t taken any decision so far and I have no desire to contest election, but some party leaders said that the way they obey my policy decisions, I should also respect their decision.”

However, an official announcement regarding Mr. Pawar’s candidature is yet to be made.

Sharad Pawar declared, the NCP will contest in the Solapur district of Western Maharashtra’s Madha constituency.

On the 13th of February, the Party conducted a meeting in the presence of Vijaysinh Mohite Patil, Ranjitsinh Mohite Patil, Prabhakar Deshmukh, Rashmi Bagal and other NCP leaders.

The meeting was conducted by Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar, a senior NCP leader and the Legislative Council Chairman. During the meeting, Mr. Nimbalkar discussed about Mr. Pawar being nominated as a candidate for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. He also sought opinions from the Party members and discussed the same.

Jayant Patil, the President of the NCP in Maharashtra, said, “We believe the NCP chief’s election to the Lok Sabha will strengthen his efforts of uniting the opposition. The Party believes it will send a positive message among party cadre. He is yet to take a take call on the request.” An ex NCP minister said,“The idea is to win maximum seats. Senior leaders namely Chhagan Bhujbal (Nashik) and Ganesh Naik (Thane) have been asked to contest. The decision on their names is likely to be taken in Thursday’s meet.”

An official announcement regarding Sharad Pawar contesting the elections will be made after a Parliamentary Committee Meeting, scheduled on the 14th of February, in Mumbai.
