Facebook Messenger joins billion downloads club

Facebook creates record in Google’s backyard. The Messenger App is now downloaded in more than a billion Android based handsets.

In a recent press release, Facebook has announced that their Facebook Messenger has been downloaded more than a billion times from the Google Play store. Facebook Messenger is an Android version of its Messenger application.

In an online post, David Marcus, the head of the Messenger team said, “Happy to make it to the very exclusive Android 1 billion+ downloads club.”

On the hand, technology critics are claiming ‘ High download count was due to the fact that Facebook being the widely used service out of the social network, it is compelling people to get the app’.

It is just last year when Facebook decided to break off messenger from the main Facebook application for mobile users, which helped mobile users to get a much faster and easier platform for Facebook chatting. In April, Facebook enabled face-to-face conversations among users of the app around the world with Video calling option.

According to TechCrunch, Facebook is the only other app apart from some other Google apps with more than a billion Google Play downloads.
