On Saturday, eight students of Karnataka drowned in the Arabian Sea near the Vayri coast in Maharastra. The students hailed from Belgaum and were studying in Maratha Engineering College and went for a swim in the sea. The students were a part of 47 members group. The bodies of the deceased were recovered and included five boys and 3 girls.

Of the 47, 30 went for swimming, of which eight drowned, three were rescued and nineteen of them swam to safety. The Police said, “Three students have been rescued and are under medical observation.” The incident occurred in the Vayri hamlet near Malvan in the Konkan region at around noon.

The police added, “It was the time of high tide and some students had ventured into the deep water. After some of them began drowning, some others in the group rushed to save them, but it was late.”

Amogh Goankar, the Superintendent of Police of Sindhudurg, said “Three students were brought to shore by the police in an unconscious state. Two of them are admitted to a Malvan hospital and one girl, who is in a serious condition, is being treated at the state-run hospital in Oros.”

This is second such incident, the first one wherein 18 students drowned in the sea in February and all of them were from Pune.
