The Ministry of Human Resource Development has ordered all the technical institutions to close down the centers and courses that have few takers. All the Central Government Funded technical institutions like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) have received this message.

All the courses, the Centre said, which have seen a decline in the number of students joining will be closed down. It has also ordered the institutions to introduce new courses and disciplines. These have to be introduced after analyzing the market, the opportunities, employment chances and also a requirement for further education in the course. The minister of HRD, Mahendra Nath Pandey, addressed this question after he was presented with a written question in the Rajya Sabha.

The Minister said, “all Centrally Funded Technical Institutions(CFTIs), which are participating in joint counselings have been asked to review the position of vacant seats in the last three years and to revise the number of seats in each discipline after considering employment opportunities, national requirements, available infrastructure and scope for future.”

He also added, “New courses and disciplines may be introduced only after analyzing market opportunity, employability, and requirement of higher education/ research/ entrepreneurship. CFTIs may also consider the closure of some disciplines or keep them in abeyance for a few years after following the due process.”

Through this decision, they expect to bring a change in the curriculum and also save funds on the courses that have been seeing stagnation and redirect these funds to new courses which will create a bigger stage of opportunities for students.
