Four people were booked under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for beating and torturing a Dalit man.

The four accused were identified as Rinku, Amarjeet, Beeta alias Binder and Lucky alias Goli.

On the 7th of November, Jagmail Singh, a resident of Changaliwala, was badly treated by the four and thrashed in Sangrur district of Punjab.

Though the incident took place on the 7th of November, it came to light on the 15th of November after it was reported by the media.

According to sources, Jagmail, who belongs to the Dalit community in Punjab, had a dispute with one of the accused, Rinku.  Although they came to a conclusion and resolved the matter, Rinku allegedly picked up Jagmail from the residence of Panch Gurdial Singh around 9:00 A.M., on the 7th of November.

Rinku, accompanied by Beeta, took Jagmail to Rinku’s residence, where Amarjeet and Lucky were also present.  They tied Jagmail to a pillar and started beating him and when Jagmail asked them to give him water to drink, they forced him to drink urine.

The Lehra Police Station registered a case against all the four accused and booked them for abduction and wrongful confinement under various sections of the IPC.  The accused were also charged under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Besides, the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission also sought a report from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SP) of Sangrur regarding the incident.

Tejinder Kaur, the President of the SCC, said the Commission came to know about the incident through media reports and demanded strict action against the culprits.

The Punjab Police launched an investigation for the same.  However, no arrest was made yet.
