Kerala reported its first case of Zika virus infection on the 8th of July.

The Kerala Health Minister Veena George confirmed the first case of Zika virus in Kerala. According to the State Minister, a 24 year old pregnant woman, who recently on the 7th of June was diagnosed with the disease on the 28th of June. She delivered a baby on the 7th of June and as of now, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

Zika virus was identified as one of the dangerous viruses by the World Health Organisation (WHO) due to the mosquito bite of the Aedes species. The same species of mosquito is responsible for Dengue, Chikungunya and Yellow Fever.

Some of the common symptoms of this virus are mild fever, headache, conjunctivitis, rash, joint pain and muscle pain. Typically, these symptoms last for 2-7 days and in many cases, the patient shows no symptoms. Mostly, pregnant women, adults and children are likely to get this infection. Discovered in 1947 in the Zika forest of Uganda, the virus has been reported in more than 80 countries including India.

Currently, there is no proper medication or diagnosis of Zika virus, transmitted from the Aedes mosquitoes, which generally bite during the day time. Although there are no serious hazards of Zika Virus, if the virus infects a pregnant lady, it could be dangerous and could complicate the pregnancy.

The disease will also be transmitted through blood transfusion or sexual activities. Avoiding chances of mosquito bite is the ideal way to prevent the disease.

However, if infected, proper rest and food with immunity could be a way to recover from the illness.

Highlighting the Zika virus case in Kerala, the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune tested the samples and confirmed the first case of Zika virus in the Southern State.

The cases might increase as 13 samples out of 19 samples are said to be positive for this Zika virus.

Meanwhile, after the first confirmed case of Zika virus, the Health Ministry of Kerala took immediate measures to contain the spread of this virus. The spread of Zika virus amongst people at a time of the second wave of the deadly Wuhan virus (Novel Coronavirus) would be a tough challenge for the State Government.

To ensure the spread of the virus does not take place, the State Government alerted all the district officials, directing them to take the necessary measures.
