The Union Government condemned the fire incident in Male, the capital city of Maldives, which killed at least 10 people, including nine Indians.
The unfortunate incident occurred on the 9th of November, Wednesday, when fire brake out in a building, a shelter to many migrant workers in Male. As per sources, the massive fire started spreading through a garage, located on the ground floor of the building. The fire swept through cramped lodgings on foreign workers, residing in the building, in Male, leaving ten people dead and several others severely injured.
According to the Maldives Government Officials, 10 bodies were recovered from the upper floor of a building destroyed in the fire and rescue operation is underway.
The Indian High Commission in Male, Maldives, said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic fire incident in Male which has caused loss of lives, including reportedly of Indian nationals. We are in close contact with the Maldivian authorities.” The High Commission added that they can be reached at +9607361452 or +9607790701 for assistance.
Furthermore, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Maldives said, an evacuation centre has been set up in a nearby stadium, in Male. The NDMA said, “NDMA has established an evacuation centre in Maafannu Stadium for those displaced and affected by the fire in Male. Arrangements are being made to provide relief assistance and support.”
