Modi should focus on cleaning Yamuna first.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi came up with a mission to clean Ganga, but this mission will remain incomplete without cleaning the River Yamuna first. The majority of the pollutants in Ganga are contributed by the Yamuna. The River gets infested with sewage while passing through Delhi because of industrial chemicals dumped by factories in Delhi, Haryana, and even Mathura. River Yamuna’s water is the lifeline of millions of people in the four states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Delhi, and Haryana.  Last year, the Central Government had promised to reduce the pollution of the river in Delhi, but the promise has arrived at a stalemate.

PM Modi has now promised the residents of Varanasi to make Ganga pollution free like the Sabarmati in Gujarat. On Wednesday, the residents of Agra pledged to keep the city clean in the two-day Yamuna Mahotsav. A leading industrialist in Agra, Puran Dawar told a daily that the pollution in the Yamuna is entirely caused by the industrial wastes coming from the four states including Delhi.

According to the rules set by the Supreme Court,  the industries of Agra are strictly restricted to pollute the river, hence, industries that spread pollution are restricted to function in Agra. Puran further said that the river will soon die in the coming years because of the industrial wastes coming from upstream towns.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi should ensure and take corrective measures against the pollution caused by the industries and also look towards the Yamuna like he had promised at a rally in Agra last year.
