PM Narendra Modi Launches Chauri Chaura Centenary Celebrations Marking Year Long Celebration

On the 4th of February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chauri Chaura centenary celebrations. 

The incident would be celebrated for the entire year 2021, remembering officials who lost lives in the 1922 Chauri Chaura fire incident.

Mr. Modi said the Chauri Chaura incident was not only limited to a police station being set on fire, but conveyed a very crucial and huge message.

Mr. Modi said, “Incident of Chauri Chaura was not limited to a police station being set on fire. Message of the incident was huge. Due to various reasons, it was treated as (a) minor incident, but we should see it in context. The fire was not just in the station but in the hearts of people.”

The statement was made during the inaugural event of Chauri Chaura centenary celebrations. The event was attended by PM Modi through a virtual conference. The event is being celebrated in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

From the 4th of February there would be a year long celebration for the Chauri Chaura incident. The event would also be inducted in the Guinness Book of World Records.

A postal card would also be released in respect to the Chauri Chaura incident.

The 1922 incident of Chauri Chaura police station was said to be an important event towards the freedom struggle in India.

On the 4th of February 1922, a group of freedom fighters participating in the non cooperation movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi, were fired upon by the police, leading to the death of many of the protestors.

In retaliation, the protestors attacked and set fire to the Chauri Chaura police station, which killed many of its occupants.
