In a tragic accident, eleven people, including two children and three women were killed in the Betul district of Madhya Pradesh.

In the wee hours of the 4th of November, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) in which 11 people were travelling, collided with an empty bus in the Jhallar region of Betul district. After the accident, the police rushed to the spot and started a rescue operations, said Mr. Shivraj Singh Thakur, the Betul Police Control Room Assistant Sub Inspector.

Addressing the media, Mr. Shivraj Singh Thakur said, “Six men, three women, a girl aged around five years, and a toddler died on the spot in the accident that took place around 2:00 A.M.”

Getting into details, after an initial investigation it was said, those who died in the accident are farm labourers, coming from the Amravati region of Maharashtra to Madhya Pradesh.  All the deceased were said to be farm labourers and residents of the Betul district, in Madhya Pradesh.  Moreover, the cause of the accident is said to be the negligence of the driver, who is said to have dozed off while driving.  While all the passengers including the driver died, the driver of the bus, into which the SUV rammed, received minor injuries.

Upon hearing about the tragic incident, Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, expressed condolences and announced an ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh for the families who lost their kin and Rs. 50,000 for those injured.

Mr. Narendra Modi tweeted, “Pained by the loss of lives due to an accident in Betul, MP.  Condolences to the bereaved families.  May the injured recover soon.  An ex gratia of Rs ₹2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. ₹50,000 would be given to the injured.” 

Mr. Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, also expressed condolences and ordered a probe into the accident.
