On World Idli Day, the food delivery app Swiggy shared a survey in which a Hyderabad man spent Rs. 6 lakhs on idli, in one year.
The Idli lover from Hyderabad ordered 8,428 plates of Idlis including orders placed for friends and family, while traveling across cities like Bengaluru and Chennai.
According to Swiggy, in its analysis covering the period from March 30, 2022 to March 25, 2023, the platform delivered approximately 33 million plates of idlis, across India. The insight explaining the popularity of idlis and south Indian breakfast was shared on the occasion of World Idli Day, marked on the 30th of March, Thursday.
Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai are the top three cities where Idlis are ordered the most, followed by Mumbai, Coimbatore, Pune, Visakhapatnam, Delhi, Kolkata, and Kochi. The analysis also revealed that the most popular time to order idlis is between 8:00 A.M., to 10:00 A.M., with consumers from Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Coimbatore, and Mumbai also ordering idlis during dinner time.
The popularity of idlis is not just popular amongst south Indians, but is widely eaten as breakfast by other communities including North Indians, because of its health benefits.
