K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana, on the 10th of February, laid the foundation stone for the 13 lift irrigation (LI) schemes at Nellikal, Nalgonda. 

Mr. Rao arrived at Nellikal in a private helicopter at around 12:40 P.M., and laid the foundation stone after performing a special puja. 

Nalgonda was one of the most backward districts in joint Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, however, under the leadership of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government the district is on the path of development. 

The erstwhile Nalgonda district would now have 6 lakh acres of land under irrigation with the new irrigation project. 

The 13 LI schemes would add an ayacut of 1.30 lakh acres, including stabilisation that would solve the  problems of branch canals and major distributaries on the Nagarjuna Sagar Left Bank Canal (NSLBC.) 

The 13 LIs include Nellikal LIS, R-9 Barakhatgudem of Munagala LIS, Muktyala branch channel LIS, Janpahad branch channel LIS, and Balepalli Chapala Thanda channel. 

The Nellikal Lift Irrigation Scheme on the foreshores of the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir in Tirumalagiri-Sagar mandal would irrigate 4,175 acres covering drought-prone Erracheruvu Thanda, Pilligundla Thanda, Jalthanda, Mulathanda and Nellikal villages which face drought situation in the State. 

Under the new LI, 259.72 MCFT of water would be used to irrigate the 4,175 acres for kharif Irrigated Dry (ID) crops.

The KCR led Telangana Government sanctioned an amount of Rs. 585 crores for Nalgonda irrigation projects. 

After laying the foundation stone, KCR is scheduled to attend a meeting at Halia.  The public meeting with an expected 20,000 to 30,000 people is organised in  the view of Nagarjuna Sagar by election and graduates’ MLC election.

Today’s foundation stone ceremony was attended by the Telangana Legislative Council Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy, Minister G. Jagadish Reddy, Members of the Legislative Assembly ( MLAs,) Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs,) Zilla Parishad chairman and other elected representatives of Nalgonda district.
