The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will impose a ban on plastic in function halls in the City. The civic body aims at restricting the use of plastic bags below 50 microns of thickness.
On Monday, the GHMC, at the launch of Haritha Utsavalu (Green Festival) decided to restrict plastic cups, glasses and plates at various function halls in Hyderabad.
The GHMC Deputy Commissioner will interact with the management of the marriage halls. He will explain the importance of banning plastic and encourage the management to ensure the same.
GHMC Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy sweetened the deal for the function halls about the ban plastic completely. He said those particular halls would be recognized and felicitated. Every year, Hyderabad collects the most plastic during the marriage season.
Compost pits will need to be established at every function hall said, Mr. Reddy. The GHMC Commissioner also said the civic body planted 3 crores saplings in the past three years.
The corporation will also announce a citywide ban on plastic from the 10th of March.
