Maldives President Declares State Of Emergency

The Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, declared a state of emergency for 15 days on Monday. The political unrest and power struggle between the Supreme Court and its Government in the Republic of Maldives led to this decision.

A statement released by the President’s office read, “During this time, though certain rights will be restricted, general movements, services and businesses will not be affected.”

Last week, the Supreme Court ordered the release of a few political prisoners. The Court also sought reinstatement of elected members from the Parliament. This was done in an attempt to increase the power of the Opposition. However, President Yameen refused to adhere to the Court’s order.

On Sunday, the Maldives Attorney General advised the law enforcement to uphold the Constitution. It further warned the Court might issue a ruling to impeach the President of Maldives. Tensions escalated on Monday after the Maldives National Defence Forces allegedly broke into the Supreme Court in Male.

The Maldives President said that during the emergency period, “the safety of all Maldivians and foreigners living in and visiting the Maldives will be ensured.”

The governments of India, China and the United Kingdom have issued travel warnings to the Maldives citing the political unrest.
